August 1st, 2016
Dear Families,
Welcome back to school! My name is Janice Acopan and I will be your child’s second grade teacher this school year. I am very excited to meet you and your child. I have been teaching on Maui for almost 20 years now. I was born and raised here, attended Lihikai School, Maui High School, Maui Community College and The University of Hawaii at Manoa so it is such a pleasure to be at home and give back to our community and be a part of life’s precious gifts—-our children.
I believe that some of the most valuable things that I we have in life are experiences, memories and support. Everything we do, say and act up stem from these ideas. This school year will be filled with many memorable experiences, academic as well as social, life-learning skills. This also marks Pomaika’i in its 10th year! Your child will be able to explore, grow and succeed through our many creative, rigorous and innovative learning processes.
I am confident that we will all work together as a team to ensure your child’s education. I believe that open, meaningful and strong communication between all of us (child, parent, teacher) will be a very positive element in maintaining a good understanding and appreciation of every person’s role and expectations this year.
On August 3rd, your child will bring home a very simple All About Me assignment/project. This will be due next week Monday, August 8th. As a school and state we are implementing the Wonders Reading Program and Steppingstones Math Curriculum for the year. We will also be using PLTW which stands for Project Lead The which is a very hands-on, critical thinking, project-based science curriculum. We will begin Home reading homework on August 1st. After, we will gradually add spelling, grammar leveled readers and math homework on August 8th. You can learn more about these programs on our website and the students will have access to using some of the programs at home.
Thank you for allowing me to be an important part of your child’s life. I will be sending more information about our class expectations, grade level curriculum skills, homework policies and projects that we will work on this year within the next few weeks and on our class website.
Please feel free to contact me on e-mail and/or phone when you have questions or concerns. I am looking forward to working with both of you and your child soon.
Mahalo,
